“The first time I met [Frasier] I was at church and when I found out she was involved with the school system and came to work here, I was so enthusiastic about being able to work with such a fine individual [tha] she is and what she means to this county and the citizens in the county and especially the school system,” Superintendent John Harper said. “To work with an individual like her who has served children her entire life, and life hasn’t been real easy for her either, is just a blessing to all the kids here and I’m just thrilled as superintendent that I’ve had the opportunity to work with her — what a dynamic personality.”
Friends, family and former coworkers gathered in the newly renamed library to give Frasier a surprise party celebrating the dedication. When Frasier walked through the doors the crowd broke out in applause and Harper told her they were standing in the Dorothy Orr Frasier Media Center.
Frasier said she was completely surprised.
“I love you all so much, and Cloverleaf School was such a dear place to me for so many years,” she said. “Well, whoever spearheaded this, and whoever came up with it, I’m totally shocked. But I’m honored.”
Harper then asked Frasier to join him in the hallway, where they
unveiled the letters over the media center’s door.
“Well I am just totally surprised and speechless,” Frasier said after the letters were unveiled. “I’m just appreciative and humbled and I wonder why, with all the people that have worked in this school system, why they chose me. But I appreciate it.”
Originally from Albertville, Ala., Frasier’s first teaching job was at Calhoun High School where she taught physical education and coached basketball, later moving back to Alabama to teach at Saks High School. In 1958, she moved to Cartersville and began teaching at Kingston Elementary School.
Since retiring in 1995, Frasier has worked with the donation-based teacher grant program, which fell under the umbrella of the Bartow Education Foundation when it began in 2000. The program provides grants based on a teacher’s individual plan to supplement a child’s education experience.
