This year’s Cass Colonels’ baseball team is inviting players from the school’s spring 1977 and 1980 baseball teams to participate in recognition ceremonies at their Class AAAA state playoff game Friday, May 3, versus Columbia.

The first game of Friday’s scheduled doubleheader begins at 6 p.m. A third game, if necessary, starts at 2 p.m. Saturday.

“Upon further research, the 1977 and 1980 teams hosted the state quarterfinals,” said Charles Wilson, the school’s associate principal. “Cass hosted Avondale in 1977; Winder-Barrow in 1980.”

Wilson’s research also revealed that Gifford Reynolds was the head coach and Brent Perry was the assistant coach for Cass in 1977.

In the Class AA state quarterfinals against Avondale, Cass won Game 2, 10-9, but the Blue Devils, prevailed in Games 1 and 3.

Against Winder-Barrow, the Colonels were swept in the 1980 Class AAA state quarterfinals

Friday’s state playoff game will mark the first time in more than 30 years that the Colonels have hosted a state playoff game.

Team players from 1977 and 1980 who want to attend Friday’s game may email Wilson at, or call the school at 770-606-5845, ext. 1026, for more information.
