The Cartersville-based Rome Service Center has been honored in the past with several employees receiving Quarterly Leadership Awards since the recognition's inception, but Friday marked the first ceremony in which two drivers were presented with the award in the same quarter.
"We've got two guys that's won Quarterly Leader Awards. It's very unusual that a service center gets two people win a QLA award, with close to 300 service centers and the number of people that are selected each month. ... This is really a rarity that it happens like that. So, I think it's a great thing for Rome and the region," said Roy Douglas, Rome Service Center director of operations.
Driver Sales Representatives Rick Almand and Jeff Elrod took home the awards at a Friday presentation at the Rome Service Center off of Spur 20 in Cartersville. Almand and Elrod have been with Con-way Freight for 11 and nine years respectively. The award is chosen at a corporate level after nominations are received from the 290 service centers based on peer recommendations.
The recipients agreed that nominations from their peers were the most important aspect of the award. Customer Support Representative Tammy Mullinax serves as the service center's lead on Con-way's Voices and Value Team compiling and submitting nominations for the Cartersville location.
"Rick is an 11-year employee with Con-way and during this time he has earned the respect and trust of his coworkers. Rick always is conscientious of our customers' needs and several of them contact him directly at times with questions. If Rick doesn't have the answer, he will contact one of [us] here in the office to help, which shows his dedication to excellent customer service," stated Almand's nomination, adding notes on his service in the U.S. Air Force and involvement with the community. "If there is anyone who is overdue for this award, it is Rick Almand, as a matter of fact, Conway is the winner by having Rick Almand as an employee."
Falling far outside the space allowance for nomination forms, Jeff Elrod's recommendation letter for QLA spilled from one page to the next praising his hard work and dedication.
"We have chosen to nominate DSR Jeff Elrod for QLA because of Jeff's commitment to excellence in which all other core values are contained. ... Over the years, Jeff has proven himself to be one of NRG's [Cartersville facility abbreviation] finest assets. Jeff began as a dockworker at NRG and in recent years has worn many hats for Con-way," stated Elrod's nomination letter. "In simple terms, Jeff Elrod is a hard worker who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty, but he is much more deserving than to be so simply described."
Cartersville Con-Way Manager Chip McLendon commended the drivers for their work and dedication. He too spoke to the significance of two simultaneous recipients working at one service center location.
"It means a lot. These guys run locally picking up and delivering freight, so it means a lot that they're safe, accident and injury free. They provide customer service interacting with customers day in and day out," McLendon said.
