County schools approve security upgrade

The Bartow County Board of Education on Monday voted unanimously to approve $122,353 in security camera upgrades, software and infrastructure for several local schools.

“I’ve tried to work for the last few years to get our schools [equipped with cameras] as they should, and so I simply asked Mark [Bagnell, director of technology and services,] to put together a full-budget item that would outfit the remaining number of our schools as well as upgrades at Adairsville High School and the Bartow County College and Career Academy,” Superintendent John Harper said during the board’s monthly work session, which was held directly before the regular business session. “[This] gives us cameras in all of our schools. The last ones we’ll be doing are Allatoona Elementary, Adairsville Elementary and Taylorsville [Elementary School], and then Kingston Elementary.”

In other school news, the board approved all items on its consent agenda, including the following:

• Revising the student tobacco use policy to include the barring of electronic cigarettes.

• Upgrading furnishings at Hamilton Crossing Elementary School in the budgeted amount of $22,704.

• Upgrading furnishings at White Elementary School in the budgeted amount of $84,815.

• The purchase of iMac computers for preschool special education classrooms in the amount of $11,893 to be paid for with federal preschool special education funds.

• The purchase of Apple MacBooks for special education support classrooms in the amount of $88,542 to be paid for with federal exceptional education funds.

• The purchase of Apple MacBooks for students with disabilities in the amount of $72,857 to be paid for with federal exceptional education funds.

• The purchase and installation of interactive projectors in classrooms for students with disabilities in the amount of $30,000 to be paid for with federal exceptional education funds.

• The purchase of student iMac desktop computers for pre-K- through second-grade classrooms at Emerson Elementary in the amount of $59,581 to be paid for with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds.
