Proud parents, grandparents, teachers, counselors and principals filled the Cartersville Civic Center Tuesday to honor 20 local students who represent good citizenship.

The Etowah chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented award certificates and medals during their annual awards ceremony, during which a school representative would speak about the character of a student.

"[Courtney Datson] is the epitome of a hard working, humble student and that's what I think makes her stand out at our school and to our teachers," Adairsville Elementary School Principal Melissa Zarefoss said of her school's selected student. "She comes to school every day to learn, always gives 100 percent, has a smile on her face no matter how her day has been and just makes us proud to have her [at AES]."

Genie Certain of DAR said students were chosen by teachers at their respective schools. Students who receive the good citizenship award often "excel" academically, but must show good leadership to their peers.

Students recognized during the event also are involved in extra-curricular activities such as athletics and community service.

"I would be hard pressed to think of a kinder, more gentle student with a kinder heart at [CMS]," Cartersville Middle School Principal Glenda Campbell said of student Meosha Clopton, adding she takes time to read to special needs students at the school. "She's just an extraordinary young lady and we're proud to have her represent [CMS]."
