The Daily Tribune News was among 87 newspapers to earn awards Friday during Georgia Press Association’s annual convention.

Held at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, the 128th convention honored winners of the 2014 Freedom of Information Award and the 2014 Better Newspaper Contest, handing out 610 awards in 37 categories.

Under changes for 2014, The Daily Tribune News was moved to Division C when groupings were combined, competing in an increased group with larger newspapers. Winners in the Georgia Press Association Better Newspaper Contest were honored for their outstanding achievements in newspaper journalism. Entries were judged in nine divisions based on circulation. The Daily divisions are Division A (circulation of 30,000 or more), Division B (8,000 to 29,999), Division C (less than 8,000). Weekly divisions are Division D (all tri-weekly and bi-weekly papers), Division E (weeklies with circulation of 4,000 to 14,999), Division F (3,000 to 3,999) and Division G (less than 3,000), and division H (all weekly newspapers of 15,000 or more and all associate media members).

The Daily Tribune News received three awards Friday — first place for local news coverage, third place for business coverage and third place for spot news photo.

The first-place recognition for local news coverage came from the newspaper’s Jan. 31, 2013, edition covering the deadly tornado that ripped through Adairsville the day prior. The Daily Tribune also was featured for the local news accolade in a special edition newspaper printed for the GPA convention.

Photojournalist Skip Butler garnered the third-place spot news photo honor for his tornado rescue photo featured in the Jan. 31, 2013, edition. The photo was picked up by media outlets around the country in the days that followed the Adairsville tornado.

Business and environment reporter Jason Lowrey’s “Cheers: Anheuser-Busch marks 20 years in Bartow” feature in the AroundTown section on Dec. 1, 2013, earned him the third-place award in business coverage. It was the first individual award for Lowrey.

For DTN Publisher Johnette Dawson, the awards highlight the goals set forth by the staff.

“I am always proud of the job the staff does and am pleased the Georgia Press Association recognized that,” she said. “The staff is involved and cares, and wants to do the best job possible to present the news to the community. These awards prove they are accomplishing that.”
