Cartersville Police Department Lt. Mark Camp said in a release officers were dispatched about 9 a.m. to Highway 411 between Cline Smith and Industrial Park roads where the truck was off the roadway.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the tractor-trailer, which had been traveling northbound, had left the roadway after crossing the southbound lanes and traveled into the woods where it hit the trees and caught fire, Camp said. The driver was unable to exit the vehicle and died at the scene.
Cartersville Fire Department Capt. Mark Bagley said Wednesday evening his department was on the scene for four hours and had the blaze extinguished within 10 minutes. The fire destroyed the vehicle and burned surrounding trees.
"We kept the entire road closed for an hour," Bagley said, adding that the southbound lanes were closed for roughly five hours.
Just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton said authorities could not confirm the driver's identity "100 percent." He said DNA testing would be done.
