Mrs. Payne was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Bartow County, a daughter of the late Gilbert and Frankie Simpson Chitwood. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Weldon Payne, and two grandchildren, Jason Scott and Matthew Grady Payne.
She was a lifelong member of the Rowland Springs Baptist Church. She was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class with her special friend Pat Barrett, who she loved very much. Together they started and kept the church nursery for many years.
Survivors include her children and spouses, Lamar and Barbara Payne, Donald and Brenda Payne Moore and Danny and Carolyn Payne, all of Cartersville. She had three grandchildren, David and Tip Payne of LaGrange, Hal and Michelle Payne of Kennesaw and Richard and Staci Moore Vaughn; seven great-grandchildren, Stewart Ross and Layton Payne of LaGrange, Will, Cammi and Daniel Payne of Kennesaw and Emma Grace Vaughn of Cartersville. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Dorothy Chitwood; her special great-nephew, Michael Yancey; her niece and nephew, Sandra Chitwood Yancey and Edde Yancey; and other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, from the Chapel of the Owen Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Ringwalt officiating. Interment will follow in the Rowland Springs Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Michael Yancey, Edde Yancey, Charles Simpson, Alton Kay, Jerry Welchel and J.B. Morris. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Reese, Freddy Wehunt, Ronald Nally, Larry Cox, Ron Price, Harvey Knight, W.R. Striplin, Tim Storey and Ken Wade.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Rowland Springs Baptist Church Building Fund.
The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7.
