Emerson City Council on Monday approved the rezoning of 56 acres and heard a first reading for a zoning map amendment for a portion of the LakePoint Sports development.
The 56 acres owned by Paga Mine Properties sits near the Department of Transportation and Optimum Technologies on Highway 41. The rezoning moved the property from light industrial to C2-Community Commercial Retail.
Developers do not have specific plans for the site, but have fielded inquiries about the property. According to Ed Brush, representing Paga Mine Properties earlier this month, all but roughly 4 acres sits in a 100-year floodplain.
The city also has asked that 74 acres behind Love's Travel Stop and south of Old Allatoona Road be rezoned to mixed use 2 from its current zoning of light industrial.
"They are going to get the final piece of the puzzle," Assistant to the City Manager Todd Heath said of LakePoint Sports.
The council also approved a resolution for a CSX facility encroachment agreement.
Heath explained that the city will bore under the railroad in the area of Love's for the installation of sewer pipe.
The council will meet next Monday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. at city hall.
