Estelle Johnson Hamby, 90, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2012, in Raleigh N.C.

Mrs. Hamby was born in Gadsden, Ala., on April 5, 1922. She was reared in Gadsden and Rome. She is a graduate of Rome High School and attended King Business College in Rome.

She and Dame S. Hamby were married on Jan. 20, 1943, and after a successful business career with the Trust Company of Georgia, she devoted her life to being a mother and wife.

Mrs. Hamby was a supporting and contributing partner to the career of her husband. She traveled extensively with him and was known throughout the textile industries of the world for her cheerful personality and her dedication to her family and friends.

She was an active member of the North Carolina State University Woman's Club and participated in neighborhood activities and served as an officer in the Garden Clubs in the community.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Dr. Dame Scott Hamby; and a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Foell and husband D.B. Foell; a son, Michael S. Hamby and wife Dorothy Hamby; and grandson, Scott Hamby.

The family will receive friends and family on Saturday, April 14, from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, followed by the graveside service at 2 p.m. at Raleigh Memorial Park.
