“This event is to raise money for my Eagle Scout project. Each scout, in order to attain the rank of Eagle, must do a community service project, as well as earn all required merit badges,” said Cunnea. “This project is donated with no cost to the recipient. The potential Eagle Scout is responsible for organizing the project, fundraising, purchasing any needed materials and labor for the project.”
With two seatings — the first at 8 a.m. and the second at 9 a.m. — patrons were served a flapjack breakfast at Applebee’s by members of Troop 54 and volunteers from the Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Cunnea not only organized the breakfast, but also served as manager, assigning duties, overseeing the event and making sure everyone had a good time.
All funds raised at the flapjack fundraising breakfast will be used to cover the cost of Cunnea’s community service project, re-flooring the fellowship area of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Kingston. The current flooring is over 25 years old. Cunnea said any money raised above the cost of re-flooring also will be donated to the church.
“Troop 54 teaches these young men about responsibility, leadership, and many skills that will be useful in life,” said Cunnea. “They also learn about preserving our environment and about working as a team.”
The scouts provided setup, servers and cleanup for the fundraiser. This is not the first time Cunnea and Troop 54 have provided service to the community.
“Troop 54 has had over 30 scouts that have made it to Eagle over the years, which means many community service projects,” said Cunnea. “Troop 54 does Allatoona cleanups every year, food drives for the needy and they help maintain local camp sites as well.”
Cunnea was able to reach his goal, selling 180 tickets to the flapjack breakfast.
“This fundraiser has allowed me to be able to raise the funds that I needed for the project,” Cunnea said. “I would like to thank Applebee’s for allowing this wonderful opportunity to be able to raise the money needed. I would also like to thank everyone who has purchased tickets or donated time or money to help me achieve my goal.”
