In honoring his memory and passion in life, the family of Garrett Steven Black has established the Garrett Steven Black Baseball Scholarship Fund.

Black, 8, passed away March 14 after he was hit and killed in a bus accident at the city school system's bus barn on Milner Road.

After hearing of the tragedy, Rep. Christian Coomer stated that he "contacted the family and offered my condolences and asked if [he] could help on any level." Parents Eric and Kim Black suggested the scholarship.

"We haven't done a 'fundraiser,'" Coomer said, "but so far we have over $4,500 brought in from individuals. Our goal is for $15,000 for a perpetual endowment in Garrett's name."

In an effort to build funds for the scholarship, Fantastic Sam's hair salon will be offering $10 haircuts and donating 100 percent of the proceeds to the scholarship April 14. The salon will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and hold raffles throughout the day. Located at 402 East Church St. next to Moe's, Garrett had been a patron of the salon since 2007.

To contribute financially, individuals can deliver or mail donations to the Christian A. Coomer Attorney at Law office, 127-A W. Main St., Cartersville, GA 30120. For more information call 770-402-5982.
