George retired from The Anniston Star as editor and was former managing editor of The Daily Tribune News here in Cartersville from 1955-1959. Although a lifelong Baptist, he had joined Liberty Hill Congregational Methodist Church. George was a gentle spirited man whom everyone loved. He loved his grandchildren, enjoyed reading, photography, collecting stamps and putting puzzles together. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Knight Evans; his son, Ronnie Evans; and his brother, Avery Chapman.
Survivors include his sons, George W. “Sonny” Evans lV (Cindie) of Lynn Haven, Fla., and Tim C. Evans (Kathy) of Anniston, Ala.; his grandchildren, Lauren Evans of Atlanta, Jordan Evans of Oxford, Ala., and Kelsey Butler of Huntsville, Ala.; his brothers, Ronald W. Evans and William Chapman; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, June 13, in the chapel of the Parnick Jennings Funeral Home and Cremation Services with the Rev. Wayne Knight officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at K & L Brown Memory Chapel in Anniston, Ala. The family will receive friends here from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday at Parnick Jennings Funeral Home.
