“Last spring I learned that these three authors have had books on the Georgia Peach Teen Book List,” AHS Media Specialist Lena Adams said. “... Every year, high school students in Georgia nominate their favorite books for young adults and the ones that receive the most nominations [make up] the Peach Teen reading list for that year.”
The guests will be Vicky Alvear Shecter, author of “Cleopatra’s Moon,” “Cleopatra Rules!: The Amazing Life of the Original Teen Queen” and “Alexander the Great Rocks the World”; Jennifer Jabaley, author of “Crush Control” and “Lipstick Apology”; and SR Johannes, author of “On the Bright Side: The Starlings,” “Untraceable: The Nature of Grace series” and “Unspeakable: The Nature of Grace Series.”
When asked why the authors were touring at a discounted rate, Johannes said in a press release, “We were noticing a decrease in author visits being scheduled at schools. After seeing how much the harsh budget cuts impacted special programs and staff over the summer, we wanted to do something to make a difference in our state.”
Adams said community members are welcome to visit the school to meet with the authors.
“What they’ll do first is they’ll come in for a big group session for anybody who wants to come and they’re going to talk about themselves, the books they’ve published, and then they’ll do question and answers because kids always have questions,” Adams said. “The biggest thing they want to stress is ‘you can do this too.’ They were normal people with normal lives who just had a story and they want to share and teach how you can also do this.”
The press release states, “According to the National Center for Family Literacy, more than 30 million Americans have reading skills below basic literacy levels. By visiting approximately twenty schools over forty days, these Georgia Peaches hope to make a small difference by touching over 10,000 kids.”
