"We want the girls to learn that they can be a success regardless to what their situation is in whatever it is that you choose to be," GEMS co-founder Susan Harris Thomas said.
The event will include various workshop sessions to help young ladies learn appropriate communication skills and techniques. Communication via social networking sites, telephone etiquette and non-verbal cues through appropriate dress for interviews in a collegiate and business atmosphere are a few topics on the agenda.
"We also have a session at 12:45 that moms are invited to attend," Thomas said. "The 'Mom and Me' session will be looking at the obstacles teens face and how they are growing and want to be independent but their mother is still being mother." This workshop focuses on how mothers and daughter can effectively communicate during the teenage years.
Partnering with the Women of Georgia Power, a session of a panel of women discussing non-traditional career roles is also included on the schedule of events. Coinciding with this, Dr. Tammy Reginelli, a former counselor for Bartow County Schools now working with Polk County, is this year's motivational speaker.
Written resources in the forms of pamphlets and flyers from the Department of Labor will also be included in a packet for each individual, including tips for resume writing and similar advice.
GHC, The American Association for Women in Community Colleges and the American Association of University Women are also partnering with GEMS.
Although the event is open to the public, the age range GEMS usually tries to reach is between 12 and 17. Pre-registration is recommended and forms can be submitted at www.gems.eventbrite.com. The event is free to attend.
