Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 30, at the Damascus Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Bartow Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 29, at Eppinger's Funeral Home.
Hattie was born in Bartow County on Oct. 15, 1911, to the late Ben and Minnie Buford Lewis. She learned to love God at an early age and united with the Damascus Baptist Church where she served faithfully until her death. Hattie was a mother to the entire community of Emerson and was most often referred to by all as "Mama Hattie."
She leaves to cherish her memory: seven children, James Whitfield (Annie Ruth), Solomon Whitfield, Christine Whitfield, Calvin Knowles (Jean), Sarah Hardin (Joe), Laura Freeman (Joe), and James Calvin Knowles; a sister Louise Knowles; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
