According to the Bartow County Fire Department, an electrical pole on Peoples Valley Road at Lewis Road ignited into flames as intense cloud to ground lightning flashed through the area. Two power lines were re-routed through the poles at Oak Beach Drive at Wilson Street and on Ga. 253 at Old Alabama Road. The Cartersville Fire Department reported a downed line Monday on West Avenue.
The BCFD also reported that a garage located at the residence at 4040 New Hope Church Road in Acworth was engulfed in flames after a bolt of lightning hit the structure. No one was injured in the fire, but the garage, which collapsed into the basement below, has been considered a total loss.
Another residence on Crystal Mountain Road off of Dabbs Bridge Road near the Cobb County line also reported a fire due to lightning. The home sustained minimal damage and the Cartersville fire crews as well as a unit from nearby Cobb were on the scene to assist Bartow personnel with a tree that had fallen on the power line and to extinguish the fire.
In Emerson, an abandoned home on Martin Luther King Jr. Street had a large oak tree split it in two and another large oak in the cemetery across from Emerson Elementary School looked as if it had exploded.
According to reports, only one person was injured as a result of the storms. One male, an identity and age has not been released, was indirectly struck by lighting as he held an unidentified object above his head while outside.
"We caution people to watch when storms come in," said Battalion Chief Tim Patterson with the BCFD. "High winds can cause limbs and trees to fall, so stay away from trees."
