A memorial service was held Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, in Carson, Calif., for Colonel Joe Frank Weems, 80, a former resident of Cartersville.

Joe Frank was born Oct. 6, 1930, to Joe Mack and Minnie Wofford Weems. The eldest of five brothers: John W. Weems (Hattie), Nathaniel Weems (deceased), Marion E. Weems (deceased), and Albert T. Weems (Kansadie)

Joe was raised in Cartersville, Ga. Upon Graduating from Summer Hill High School he enrolled at Tuskegee Institute. Joe majored in Physical Education and was a member of the R.O.T.C. Joe also excelled in baseball and was inducted into the Tuskegee Athletic Hall of Fame in September 2006.

After graduation, he entered the United States Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant and served for 30 years attaining the rank of Colonel. Joe was highly decorated for his service and was made a member of the Tuskegee Air Men.

He was married to Christine Whitfield and this union produced: Rodney Weems (Kathleen), Denise Wolf (James) and Joseph Weems (Lisa); and Grandsons Ethan Weems and Eric Weems (Rodney).

On June 7, 1998, he married Frankie Stewart and moved to Carson, Calif. Joe became a member of All Peoples Christian Church where he served as a Deacon.

Joe will be tremendously missed by relatives and friends as he leaves us with loving memories. It can be said that he definitely made a difference in the lives of those he touched.
