Mr. Layton was born Jan. 19, 1931 in Bartow County, son of the late Fred Layton and Marie Stepp Layton. He graduated from Taylorsville High School in 1948. He was a member of Cartersville First Baptist Church where he joined July 29, 1957, was a Trustee from 2005 to 2008, was an Ordained Deacon and was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. He was heavily involved in First Baptist Church and Community Missions. From 1954 to 1972, he worked at General Electric and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Army.
He was owner/operator of Jones Layton Body Shop since 1965. He was a member of the Georgia Model A Club and traveled for many years as a judge for Antique Car Shows.
Survivors include his wife, Nedra L. Davis Layton, to whom he was married on April 15, 1956; a daughter and son-in-law, Vickie Layton Brookings, and husband Mark Brookings; sons and daughters-in-law, Todd Layton, and wife Michelle Eskew Layton, Brent Layton, and wife Kelly Martin Layton; grandchildren, Justin and Stephanie Brookings, Sara Brookings, Davis Layton, Ilya Layton, Like Layton; great-grandchild, Evan Brookings; sisters and brothers, Joyce Layton Rouillard, Janie Layton Ray, Bud Layton, John Layton, Joel Layton; a dear friend, Herbert Perkins; nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m., in the Owen Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Randall Williams, Rev. Paul Battles and Dr. David Kim officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens will military honors.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at Owen Funeral Home.
Pallbearers include Justin Brookings, Davis Layton, Arliss Davis, Travis Romine, Robert Schlegel and Richard Collum. Honorary pallbearers include the Senior Adult Sunday School Class at Cartersville First Baptist Church.
