Kingston gains new business downtown

A row of empty storefronts greets those passing through downtown Kingston, but residents and business owners hope to see that change as an expanding Cartersville restaurant opens on Railroad Street.

Recently renovated by building owners, the corner shop at 14 Railroad St. served for a time as the Depot Cafe, but excitement is surrounding the entrance of Angelo's Too, Country and Italian Buffet.

"[The residents] want this here, they need this here. Why should they have to drive to Cartersville or to Rome to get something to eat?" said owner Angelo Nizzari. "The problem here is with the sewage, Kingston doesn't have sewage. ... So I am operating on foam plates and foam cups until we get the sewage in place.

"I took the initiative to be the first one to say, 'OK, let's do this. Let's start to bring Kingston back.'"

The lack of a sewage system has stymied economic development within Kingston. Nizzari hopes Angelo's Too can act as an anchor business attracting further development to the area. Speaking to area leaders and stakeholders in the project, Nizzari is asking for a completed sewer in the near future to promote growth. Among the incentives for advancing the project is tourism and Kingston's part in the Civil War as the 150th anniversary continues from 2011 to 2015.

"For tourism, we've got the biggest event coming up for Kingston. ... They've got the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, and if they don't have sewage, where's everybody going to use the bathroom? Where are they going to eat?" Nizzari said. "We need to get this going now so that when that rolls around they're ready."

Once the home of Morrell's, a well-remembered Kingston eatery, the revamped restaurant space opened Thursday as the second Bartow County establishment under the Angelo moniker. Last year, Nizzari opened Angelo's New York Style Pizza and Bistro in Cartersville's West End Commons shopping center, re-entering the food industry following his ownership of Sinatra's in Marietta.

Nizzari, born and raised in New York City, comes from a family with traditions in the food industry. As he grew up watching Julia Child and the Galloping Gourmet on TV, Nizzari became fascinated with culinary arts. After moving South with work, he soon brought with him his family's Italian cooking tradition. During the operation of Sinatra's, Nizzari found himself teaching on television like those he watched as a child.

Angelo's Too will offer Kingston residents a variety of flavors, including Southern country staples alongside Italian pastas, soups, pizza and more. To better serve rural clients, Angelo's Too also will deliver.

"I want to give people what they want. If we can do a little bit of a mix, I can give them a little bit of where I'm from and a little bit of what they're use to, and I think we can make everybody happy," Nizzari said. "When somebody comes in and eats my food and I put a smile on their face, that's where I get my enjoyment."

Nizzari has a lot of plans for the restaurant, including the use of an adjoining patio area for outdoor seating and events. Inside, he looks to offer movie nights and partner with local performers for murder mystery shows and comedy acts. An additional dining room is available for private functions.

Angelo's Too, Country and Italian Buffet is open limited hours until customer demand warrants added weekday service. A full buffet and regular menu items are available Thursday for lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday for brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
