A run of strong pitching and hitting helped Woodland knock off a sub-region rival and a top-ranked state high school softball team in recent days.

That run ended Thursday and, not coincidentally, so did the Lady Wildcats' run of victories over the state's upper echelon teams, as they fell 5-2 to Northwest Whitfield.

The Bruins, ranked No. 9 in the state coaches poll, kept the Lady Wildcats under control at the plate while putting in a strong offensive performance.

Casey Bucy pitched six innings, giving up 10 hits, 5 runs (3 earned) 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. Brooke Rogers pitched the final inning, allowing no runs, hits or walks.

Offensively, Bailey Roberts was 1-of-4 with a run scored; Lacey Fritz was 1-of-3; Bucy was 2-of-3 with a double and a run scored; and Dabney Cagle was 1-of-3.

Northwest improved its overall record to 9-3 and 6-0 in Region 7-AAAA.

The loss drops the Lady Wildcats to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in the region.

They next play today and Saturday at Twin Creeks. They play today against Gordon Lee at 5 p.m. and Harris County at 6:45 p.m. and Saturday against Marist at 8:30 a.m. and Dalton at 10:15 a.m.
