On Monday, the Cartersville girls, the No. 1 seed, over-powered Ringgold, the No. 8 seed, 5-0. Adairsville, the No. 2 seed, were also 5-0 winners over Gordon Central.
In other first day matches, Coahulla Creek defeated Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, 3-1, and Sonoraville beat North Murray, 3-2.
The Lady Canes go against Coahulla Creek at 9 a.m today in one semifinal matchup, while Adairsville’s girls face Sonoraville in the second semifnal at 11 a.m.
The loser of the of two semifinal matches play for third and fourth place starting at 1 p.m.
The girls’ region finals are scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m
“We need to be ready no matter who we play,” Canes coach Melissa Moore said.
For the Cartersville’s boys’ tennis team, its first semifinal opponent will be Sonoraville starting at 9 a.m. The second semifinal match will feature Coahulla Creek versus North Murray at 11 a.m..
Like the set-up in the girls bracket, the two semifinal losers will play for third and fourth place starting at 1 p.m.
The match to decide the boys’ region championship begins at 2:30 p.m.
In Monday’s first round matches, Cartersville, the No. 1 seed, swept Gordon Central, the No. 8 seed, 5-0; Sonoraville beat Adairsville, 4-1; Coahulla Creek were 3-1 winners over Ringgold; and North Murray shut down Lakeview Fort-Oglethorpe, 3-0.
Excel boys’ season ends
The Excel Eagles’ boys’ tennis season came to an abrupt end Monday after being swept by Rome, 3-0., in the first round of the 6-A region tournament played at Darlington High School.
“It was a long, learning season for our boys’ tennis team,” Excel coach Mark Hibbard said. “I’m already looking forward to next season.”
Cade Archer and Sam Kirkland lost their singles matches, as did the doubles team of Jake Newhouse and LaChaz Phillips.
Although the boys’ season has ended, Hibbard is hopeful that his No. 2 seed Lady Eagles can defeat Fellowship Christian today and earn an automatic bid to the state playoffs.
