A man who drowned in Lake Allatoona Friday morning around 11 at the McKinney Campground has been identified as 35 year-old Nathan Ray Swanson of Acworth, according to Melissa Cummings, public affairs coordinator for the Department of Natural Resources.

Bartow County Emergency Management Agency Director Johnny Payne stated that the dive team recovered Swanson's body from the water at 2:10 p.m.

Payne said that the man was swimming about 30 feet off shore with an uncle when he succumbed to the water. It has not been determined if the man could swim.

Friday's drowning marks the third in Bartow's Allatoona in July alone. Over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the lives of two men were claimed by the water.

A 17-year-old victim, identified as Augustine Ramirez-Del Angel of Norcross, went under the water July 3, prompting his friends to call for help. His body was recovered by the dive team after a two-hour search. No foul play or alcohol was involved in Ramirez-Del Angel's death.

A second drowning was reported later on July 3 in the area of Lucille Avenue near the Cobb County line. Upon arrival, the area was determined to be in Cobb County and the scene was turned over to Cobb authorities. The body of Byron Brock, 42, of Acworth was recovered the morning of July 4 after the search was halted for the night.

According to the Center for Disease Control, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 1 to 14 and the fifth leading cause for people of all ages. The CDC reports that about half of all drownings occur in natural water settings such as lakes, rivers or oceans.

To prevent a drowning incident, the CDC urges citizens to learn to swim, watch other swimmers nearby, learn CPR, heed warning flags, know the terrain, use life jackets, avoid alcohol and use a buddy system as opposed to swimming alone.
