"After our due diligence period and finalizing our master plan, we confirmed that the site development would require us to move over 13 million cubic yards of dirt, so we needed the extra time to get that done. And, even with a spring 2013 opening, the project will be on a fast track schedule," said Natalie Springfield with Smartegies, a public relations firm.
Initially, the estimate for a first pitch was June 2012. That date was moved back to October 2012 earlier this year. A press release sent out over the weekend now has "the first pitch, kick and shot" slated for 2013.
LakePoint also has not closed on the property for the 1,380 acre development.
Attorney David Archer said developers received an extension -- moving the projected closing from April 29 to June 30. The reason was the financial package and any necessary requirements could not be completed by the April date. It is possible closing could happen sooner.
LakePoint Sports Development Group announced in December it would construct a mixed-use complex between Interstate 75 and Highway 41. The core of the development, which features three miles of frontage along I-75 including the Red Top Mountain and Emerson-Allatoona interchanges, is a proposed 260-acre sports complex with 16 Major League Baseball-sized fields, 12 soccer and lacrosse fields and a 100,000-square-foot indoor sports facility.
Emerson city council, in the past two months, approved annexations regarding the sports complex. The majority of the acreage -- 45.92 acres -- was requested by Watkins Associated Developers Inc. and brings into the city limits the final pieces of the LakePoint Sports development. Included in those annexation requests by Watkins were just over 43 acres off Old Allatoona Road and almost three acres at 430 Joe Frank Harris Parkway.
Additionally, LakePoint gained approval earlier this year for the development from the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission, as it cleared the Development of Regional Impact. Emerson also said at that time the city was compiling research for an impact study of its own to better prepare and plan for the development and ensuing growth.
"Currently, we are in the process of trying to do economic impact analysis utilizing services from Georgia Tech, and once those numbers come in, we hope to know more what type of economic impact this will have on this community," said City Manager Kevin McBurnett then.
Braveheart Sports Events, LLC, a partnership between North Atlanta Soccer Association (NASA) and LB3 Lacrosse, on May 4 signed on as a major tenant at LakePoint.
According to a press release, the privately funded LakePoint project will host not only lacrosse and soccer, but also baseball tournaments for approximately 10 out of 12 months per year.
