In its heyday, the First Pitch Classic welcomed baseball teams from places like Pearl, Miss., and Apopka, Fla., as well as Peach State towns Perry and Valdosta -- drawing as many as 32 teams one year in the early 2000s.

Five sites handled hosting duties during those days -- including area schools East Paulding and Rockmart -- but the downturn in the economy helped reduce the number of teams, and thus the number of sites.

What hasn't been reduced is the quality of baseball expected to be seen at the Bartow County-based tournament. Fourteen teams -- eight varsity -- look to help the tournament in its continued mission in Year 15.
