There will be a meeting today at 6 p.m. for students and parents who would like to participate in the upcoming Cass High MAGIC Camp, which stands for Mentoring a Girl in Construction. The meeting will be held at the Bartow Learning Center, 738 Grassdale Road NW, with the parents of students who have registered or who wish to register for the CHS camp June 17-21.

Spaces are limited but a few remaining slots remain open. Maximum occupancy for the class is 24 girls and they must be age 14 to 21. There will be no charge for the camp.

Students must provide their transportation to and from camp. Camp hours will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the camp is open to all city and county schools students, as well as private and home school students.

Starting its first camp in 2012, MAGIC Camp is a one week camp for high school girls to learn about avenues of employment in the construction industry and to engage in hands-on training in the basic skills of carpentry, electrical and welding.

Students will acquire an OSHA certification during the MAGIC camp, while learning how to properly use the tools of the construction trade, for example, such as a tape measure and level. A cooperative effort among Georgia Power, the Bartow County Board of Education, Plant Bowen and northwest Georgia’s Technical Women in Georgia group, the camp also will include a banquet at the end of the week, during which students can share with their parents their accomplishments from the camp. The camp also will feature a tour of a local manufacturing facility.
