Cartersville police and Bartow County Sheriff's Office deputies about 8 p.m. gathered at the Short N Easy at the intersection of Grassdale Road and Thornwood Drive trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the case -- as well as jurisdiction.
The shooting, which occurred about 7 p.m., was believed to have taken place between the Short N Easy Citgo station and Benefield Circle, according to CPD Lt. Mark Camp.
A CPD investigator was overheard saying Benton was staying in the Village Apartments, which falls under the county's jurisdiction. It was unclear whether the investigator received a response to her inquiry about who may have wanted to shoot the victim.
"It is still unknown where the shooting took place, and there are no suspects and no motive at this time," Camp said in a release Monday evening.
According to witnesses at the scene, Benton walked across the store's parking lot clutching his abdomen and saying, "I've been shot. I've been shot."
Cartersville Police Officer Frasier said the victim was shot in the right side of the chest, but no one could confirm the number of times the man was hit or the caliber weapon.
Camp said the victim was unresponsive when emergency personnel arrived.
Reports Monday night indicated the man may have been shot along the sidewalk between the QuikTrip and Short N Easy, although a deputy's search of the area appeared to be unsuccessful.
Benton remains in critical condition but stable. The investigation is ongoing.
