After nearly five hours of deliberation, a jury found Carl Tommy Barnett Jr. guilty on two counts of cruelty to children in the second degree Friday in Bartow County Superior Court.

However, he was found not guilty of child molestation, and his wife, Melanie Barnett, also was found not guilty of cruelty to children.

The jury agreed that Barnett was guilty of placing his finger down the throat of an 8-year-old boy until he choked and abusing his 6-year-old sister.

Barnett was immediately taken into custody and will be sentenced April 19 pending a pre-trial investigation.

Meanwhile, two women were arrested after attacking a Bartow County deputy outside the courtroom shortly after the verdict was read. Another deputy, not involved in the fight, said they were relatives of the children involved in the case.
