State park office burglarized, safe stolen

Bartow County Sheriff's Office arrived on the scene of a burglary early Monday morning, but not in time to stop the suspects from getting away with a safe that had been bolted to the floor.

According to the incident report, the alarm at the Red Top Visitors Center at 659 Red Top Mountain Road in Acworth sounded about 3:40 a.m. and deputies were dispatched at 3:51 a.m.

When they arrived seven minutes later, the back door was open and an inner back door had been pried open at the door frame. Three cords of fire wood were lying on the floor and a wooden barrel was turned over.

A padlock that secured the inner door was missing along with a yellow plastic wagon. Deputies noticed four holes in the floor in a side room where the safe apparently had been.

In a search, deputies found a pad lock in a garbage can at the back door.

The safe, valued at $1,500 and $1,118 in cash were recovered, according to the report.
