Blue ribbons will fly from the antennas of law enforcement vehicles next week as officers around the nation honor fallen comrades.

Cartersville Mayor Matt Santini signed a proclamation Wednesday declaring May 13-19 as Police Week in the city as a way to pay tribute to fallen officers across the state and country.

"Sometimes in a work-a-day world, it gets forgotten how many police officers get killed in the line of duty," Cartersville Police Chief Tommy Culpepper said. "The Southeast typically leads the nation in officers killed in the line of duty, and I think it's good for people to one, understand that there is a time to recognize that and government should, especially governments that are served by people who decide this is the kind of work they do. So this is just our way of recognizing the officers that have been killed in the line of duty and their families because their families have given up nearly as much as they have, they gave their life and their families now do without them."
