Cartersville police are searching for a suspect in connection with a robbery that occurred Thursday morning at Get-N-Fly Food Mart on West Ave.

Chief Thomas Culpepper said authorities are searching for a black male who escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and numerous cartons of cigarettes.

An employee at the store declined to comment. He said all comments had to come from the manager who is out of town until Monday.

Anyone with information is asked to call the CPD at 770-382-2526.

Stormy weather leaves trees, lines down

A period of stormy weather Thursday left trees and power lines down around the county.

Bartow County Fire Department said reports of downed trees and lines were "scattered throughout the county," but no serious damage or injuries were reported.

In the city, a tree took down power lines at West Cherokee Avenue near the city gym.

Georgia Power reported more than 200,000 were without power statewide; 182,000 of those were in metro Atlanta.

BCFD also worked a small dryer fire at 278 Mac Johnson Road, Lot 70, about 6 p.m. Thursday. Believed to be caused by lint buildup, the fire caused minimal damage to the home.

Woman admits to stealing newspapers for coupons

A Bartow County deputy responded to 44 Glenabbey Lane Wednesday night in reference to theft by taking.

The complainant, head of the subdivision's homeowners association, told the deputy he had received several calls regarding a woman stealing newspapers from neighboring yards.

When the complainant spoke to the offender, she said her children were fans of an extreme couponing show and she collected old newspapers to clip coupons.

The woman apologized and promised to return the newspapers, saying she did not realize the newspapers were new.

The complainant did not want to file charges, but wanted the incident documented.

Man reports attempted robbery

A Law Road resident called 911 Wednesday in reference to an attempted armed robbery.

The complainant told a Bartow County deputy someone rang his doorbell numerous times about 6:30 a.m. When he opened the door, he saw a Hispanic male carrying a backpack and a black male wearing a white turban and an all-white suit standing on the steps. The black man displayed a gun and demanded money and jewelry. The homeowner told them he didn't have any cash or jewelry.

The men left the residence in a midsize Chevrolet SUV.

DVDs stolen from library

Five DVDs were taken from the Bartow County Library, according to an employee.

The complainant told Cartersville police the DVDs were taken sometime Tuesday. According to the complainant, he observed the suspects return the DVDs in the drop box outside the library before going inside.

Once there, the suspects approached the counter with five DVDs they wanted to rent, but couldn't because they did not have their library cards.

Just before closing the complainant noticed the DVDs had been removed from the counter and the suspects were gone.
