Two candidates in Kingston vie for the Post 3 city council seat, both with experience on the council.

Former Councilman Vivian Shaw is running against current councilman Elbert "Chuck" Wise Jr.

Wise has held his position on the council for the past 10 years. Shaw served on the council until 2009 when she resigned citing stress and health concerns.

Kingston voters will decide Tuesday on two council posts and mayor. In the last of a series of interviews with The Daily Tribune News, Kingston candidates answered identical questions in their bid for election.

Name: Elbert "Chuck" Wise Jr.

Occupation: Lineman with the Georgia Power Co.

Education: Adairsville High School graduate plus some college at Fort Valley State College, Floyd Junior College and Coosa Valley Tech

Family: Married 17 years to Gail Wise with one daughter, Essence. Parents, Elbert and Agnes Wise; two brothers, Anthony and Marcus Wise. And my town is my family as I've always said and my church family at Queen's Chapel Church.

Why are you running?

A. To try to help still better the community. I feel like I've supported the community as a whole by speaking out but I still want to try to make a difference.

I'd still like to see Kingston reach some of its goals that have been on the table for several years.

What makes you the best candidate?

A. I've worked and helped support the community in many different areas just working on different projects. I worked to help support the Kingston Woman's History Club and Museum. I've helped to work and support the veterans project and, during the time, I helped implement our new water system.

I've been involved in a lot of different projects and started out volunteering years ago and being involved in the community.

What would you like to accomplish if re-elected?

A. I would like to see Kingston get more public safety, such as our fire department, to help protect the citizens of Kingston. And I would like to see more parks and recreation activities for our city.

Name: Vivian Shaw

Education: J.J. Daniels High School graduate

Family: Widow with four children, nine grandchildren and expecting one great-grandchild

Why are you running?

A. I've been on the council before and I resigned ... I was in there for two years and I resigned. I've been out for two years. I had a lot of problems during that time, my husband had passed away and I thought I could handle it but it just didn't work.

I've been keeping up with everything that's been going on in town, I've been talking to the mayor and the council just knowing what's going on and there's a lot of things that need to be changed to get back in line with our charter and I'm hoping that if I'm elected that I'll be able do that.

What makes you the best candidate?

A. I've been there before. ... I feel that there's a lot of things that have been going on the past couple of years that need to be addressed and as a citizen, you don't really have any say on what's going on. But as a councilperson, you can kind of address these things and try to get them done.

What would you like to accomplish if elected?

A. The hiring and firing of people for the town, the way the same people have been hired and fired. There's a lot of things downtown that needs to be worked on that, in my opinion, have just been let go and left that's not had anything done in quite a while.
