Inside the apartment, investigators found more than 100 credit and debit cards, notebooks containing hundreds of names, addresses and social security numbers, blank IRS tax forms, tax documents sent to homes, as well as applications for credit cards. A preliminary investigation led investigators to believe that the suspects were targeting subjects who are incarcerated and using their identities to obtain credit cards, tax refunds and other financial information. The credit cards, which have been located, have been cancelled.
Investigators arrested Thomas Bruce Henley, 54, and Mary Theresa Merritt, 34, both of Cartersville. The probation search was being executed upon Merritt.
At this point, both subjects have only been charged with theft by receiving stolen property. More charges may be forthcoming as the investigation progresses. Investigators will be working with other local jurisdictions and the Federal Bureau of Investigations in this ongoing investigation.
