Looking back at the difficulty of recent years, each business and industry recovers at a different pace. Comparing this year to years past, Tanecia Weems, owner of Spirit of Dance Company, has seen a reduced reliance on dance scholarships and now seeks scholarship applicants for this year’s class.

Three years ago, Spirit of Dance Company was adapting to keep its doors open while continuing to teach as many students as possible. With more than 100 students on roll in 2009, every child involved was benefitting from some for form of scholarship.

“In 2009, there were 25 full scholarships and the rest of the studio was on partial scholarships,” Weems said. “We survived, barely, but we survived.

“One of the reasons I opened this dance studio is because when I was young my parents didn’t have money to put me in dance. It was founded so that no matter what race, what age, or financial standing that children would be able to dance.”

Now, with more than 200 students enrolled, Spirit of Dance has already given out 10 scholarships and looks to award 15 more, including four full scholarships based on need.

“Our economy has gotten better, but not much, we’re still struggling,” Weems said.

Offering ballet, tap, jazz, praise and hip hop, Spirit of Dance will host an open house every Saturday in September for prospective students, including those who wish to apply for scholarships.

Weems herself began dancing as a child in church, but always dreamed of taking lessons. As a young adult, she was able to put herself through dance school and opened Spirit of Dance Company to teach others. Last year, Spirit of Dance opened their second location expanding to Kennesaw.

“As I started taking dance, I realized there were other children that had dreams of dancing as well that would not have the opportunity to because their families were in the same situation mine was in,” Weems said. “It’s been a real blessing to be a part of these children’s lives and have the opportunity to make a footprint in the life of a child.”
