Tickets go on sale today at 8 a.m. for Cartersville Dances with the Stars, which benefits the Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter and the city of Cartersville and Bartow County schools’ homeless education programs. Even though the second annual event is not until March 1, 2014, organizers are encouraging people to secure seats now, based on the initial offering’s overwhelming interest.

“I got lots of really positive feedback on the event,” said Jessica Mitcham, executive director for the Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter. “Those who came out and purchased tickets and joined us had a great time supporting their favorite ‘celebrity’ but also hearing more about the shelter and the schools. [They enjoyed] helping to raise dollars not only to support their favorite celebrity and help them win a trophy because one of the trophies went to the People’s Choice person but also to support homeless families and children in our community.

“... Last year, we sold 1,100 total tickets to the event between tables that we’re sold and the general admission tickets,” she said, adding the inaugural Cartersville Dances with the Stars netted $60,000, which was split between its beneficiaries. “So this year we’re going to sell a little over 1,300 tickets, and we expect all those tickets to be sold really quickly. In fact, folks that want to purchase a table, we’re encouraging them to go ahead and call or come by Compass Financial Partners [today] to go ahead and reserve their table.”

On March 1, 12 teams — comprised of a local celebrity and an experienced dancer — will take the stage at 7 p.m. at the Clarence Brown Conference Center. While the competitors’ names have yet to be released, some of the celebrities consist of pastors, teachers, a high school principial, business owner and financial advisors.

Along with entertaining the crowd with one dance, the participants will vie for the Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice accolades, which will be determined based on the amount of money teams raise before the event and through the audience’s votes or donations. In addition to ticket sales and People’s Choice donations, funds will be generated by the 12 “celebrity” dancers, who are tasked with raising at least $5,000 prior to the competition.

“[The] experienced dancer will be teaching a certain type of dance to the celebrity,” said Ivy Jordan, co-chair of the event. “So we’ll have a variety of different types [of dance] ... They will all begin practicing Dec. 1 and the rules for them are they can practice no more than three hours per week up until the event to give everybody fair dancing time.

“... [I think the appeal of this event is] it’s new and exciting, especially now that reality shows are very popular. It’s fun to bring local celebrities to that and to bring a fun, new way to raise money in town.”

To purchase tickets to the event, visit Compass Financial Partners at 680 Douthit Ferry Road in Cartersville or call 770-386-7007. Tables for 10 will be sold for $1,500 and $1,000, and general admission tickets will cost $20 for the Ballroom and $15 to secure a seat in Carter Hall and Stilesboro Hall.
