Tiger, 3 Canes make all-star football team

Four Bartow County players — three from Cartersville — will be representing Team Georgia when it lines up against Team Tennessee in the Stump on Sports All-Star Football Classic tonight.

Kickoff for this year’s classic — the 10th annual extravaganza — will be at 7:30 p.m. at Spears Stadium on the campus of the McCallie School in Chattanooga.

Team Tennessee holds a 6-3 lead in the series after a 7-3 victory at Ringgold in last year’s game.

This year’s class will feature four Bartow football stars.

They are Hiram Valez, a wide receiver who starred for the Adairsville Tigers and plans to attend Georgia State; Wyndham Laye, an offensive lineman/tight end who starred at Cartersville and will play for Auburn; Alec D’ Urbano, a punter for Cartersville who has committed to Georgia Military Academy; and Arrick Camps, a linebacker/defensive back for Cartersville who will play for the University of Cumberlands.

Among the coaches of the Georgia all-stars are head coach Bobby Blevins, Heritage; David Gann, North Murray; Todd Cooper, Peach County.

Among their teammates are players from Northwest Georgia schools such as S.E. Whitfield, Dade County, LaFayette, Ridgeland, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, Gordon Central, North Murray, Ringgold, Northwest Whitfield, Gordon Lee and Dalton.

Tennessee is represented by players from Cleveland, Walker Valley, Baylor, Lookout Valley, East Ridge, Rhea County, Boyd Buchanan, Red Bank, Chatt Central, Bledsoe County, Bradley Central, Brainerd, Howard, East Hamilton, Hixson, Notre Dame, McMinn County and Silverdale.
