The Daily Tribune News received four awards -- three for first place -- at the Georgia Press Association's 2011 Better Newspaper Contest, held Friday at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel.

DTN photojournalist Skip Butler received two first-place honors for photo illustration and news photograph.

Butler's illustration of local boxer Steven Andrade was top honors in all daily newspapers in the state, beating out The (Gainesville) Times and The (Macon) Telegraph, respectively. The first-place news photograph taken by Butler was of Veronica Taylor and Brandy Schall at a candlelight vigil for Taylor's son Rob who died from a gunshot wound.

The Daily Tribune News' six-part series "The Substance of Abuse" from April 2010 won first place for community service. The series covered the effects of substance abuse on all facets of society.

Also, Marie Nesmith, the DTN features editor, won third place for religion coverage.

"I appreciate the staff's hard work shown and their continued dedication to putting out a quality newspaper," said Daily Tribune News Publisher Johnette Dawson. "Skip and Marie are valuable assets, and I am very proud to have them as a part of our team."

Newspapers are judged within their circulation size and divided into nine divisions. Awards were presented in 36 categories with 89 newspapers entered into the contest.
