Turnovers pave way for Cartersville Middle

Cartersville forced five turnovers and capitalized on each in thumping Woodland 39-8 in middle school football play recently.

Cartersville started the scoring when Antoine Jefferson returned a blocked punt 25 yards to score with 2:21 left in the first quarter.

The punt was blocked by Xavier Coaxum but the PAT was no good and the Canes settled for a 6-0 lead in the first frame. Cartersville's next score came after Tres Fezzia recovered a Woodland fumble at the Woodland 9-yard line. Jogarius Erwin scored on a 9-yard run and Jonathon Cruz added the PAT and Cartersville was up 13-0 in the first quarter.

Cartersville got the ball back on the kickoff when Fezzia recovered his second fumble at the Woodland 30-yard line. Cartersville drove to the Woodland 1-yard line, where Antoine Jefferson carried it in for the touchdown. The PAT was no good.

In the third quarter Cartersville took the kickoff and drove 65 yards, scoring on a 35-yard pass from Mason Scott to Fezzia with 2:57 left in the third quarter. The PAT was no good.

On Woodland’s first play after the kickoff, Alex Corrigan recovered a fumble at the Wildcat’s 18. Two plays later Trevor Lawrence threw an 8-yard pass to Trey Creamer for a touchdown with 1:53 left in the third quarter and Cruz added the PAT, widening their margin to 32-0.

In the final quarter Fezzia intercepted a Woodland pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown at the 7:56 mark of the fourth quarter. Payton Putzer added the PAT. Woodland scored their lone touchdown with 4:10 left in the game on a 47-yard run and added the two-point conversion to make the final score Cartersville 39, Woodland 8.

Cartersville's lone turnover came on an interception in the second quarter.
