Bartow County Sheriff's Office deputies executing a warrant for armed robbery Thursday at 3 Lee St., Cartersville, were involved in a fatal shooting.

According to Sheriff Clark Millsap, about 7 p.m. the two deputies arrived at the residence. The male subject of the warrant went out the back, and a female resident began attacking a deputy with a hammer.

Millsap said she would not stop, causing injuries to the officer. He then drew his service weapon and discharged the firearm. An officer behind him also drew and fired.

The victim was a white female, but Millsap declined to give her name or information on her injuries. A source who was not authorized to speak on the subject said the woman died as a result of her injuries.

The deputy suffered damage to his hand and was taken to Cartersville Medical Center, but the extent of his injuries was not known. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved.

"They did what they had to do. It's very unfortunate, It's a tragedy really," the sheriff said. "She had ability, opportunity and jeopardy ... The officers didn't have a choice."

The male suspect was the target of a manhunt that involved BCSO deputies, Cartersville police and K-9 units. He was captured just before 10 p.m. at the McDonald's on Highway 113.

Millsap said the connection between the man and woman was unknown, although a neighbor said the man did not reside at 3 Lee St.

Both deputies have been placed on administrative leave pending the results of a Georgia Bureau of Investigation investigation.

More information is expected to be released today.
