An early morning blaze on North Erwin Street left one man dead and a firefighter injured.

Cartersville Fire Chief Scott Carter said firefighters responded to the blaze in a ground-level unit at Winwood Apartments, 112 N. Erwin St., about 1:45 a.m. Friday.

The fire was quickly contained, but personnel discovered the body of Billy Wilson in a bedroom. Wilson is "in his mid-70s," according to a CFD employee, and a cause of death was not given. Wilson's body has been taken to the crime lab for autopsy.

The cause of the blaze has not been determined, but Carter said no foul play is suspected. Neighbors at the scene said the deceased was known to carry an oxygen tank and was a smoker.

He said CFD, Cartersville Police Department, Bartow County Coroner's Office and the state Fire Marshal's Office were involved in the investigation.

A CFD employee said the firefighter suffered a broken bone in his foot -- described as minor -- due to walking on uneven terrain in the darkness.
