Stefanie Will scored two goals to help lead Cartersville to a 4-0 defeat of Sonoraville in girls high school soccer play Tuesday.

Cartersville failed to score in the first half of the contest and made some adjustments, but it was the switch in the side of the field they were playing that probably helped the Lady Purple Hurricanes the most.

“We had the wind in our face the first half and were playing against gusts that were about 20 miles per hour,” head coach Chad Murray said. “We asked our girls to shorten their passes but it was having the wind at our back that probably helped us the most.”

Will scored the team’s first goal in the 48th minute off a rebound.

Payton Putzer, who earned the hat trick last week against Coahulla Creek, scored the team’s second goal with an assist from Will in the 66th minute.

Will tacked on her second goal of the game two minutes later, with an assist by Chloe Davis, and Cartersville had a 3-0 lead.

Sydney Miller scored the Lady Canes’ final goal in the 72nd minute as Putzer contributed an assist.

Abby Robinson earned the shutout in goal. She was credited with five saves on the evening.

Murray said the game conditions were challenging to the players.

“They faced some tough conditions,” the coach said. “You have to be mentally tough and grind through it. The snow was coming down and blowing in our faces. It was crazy.”

Cartersville improved its overall record to 10-1 with the victory. The Lady Canes are 8-0 in the region.

Murray said the region win also marks the last road game for Cartersville for a while.

“We now play seven games at home,” he said.

Cartersville returns to the soccer field on Thursday night when it hosts Ringgold.
