Even in a high school softball career that saw her ascend to the top spot as Woodland's all-time career home runs leader and No. 8 all-time in the state's record books, Diana Wimpy never quite had a day like the one she experienced on Friday.

The Cartersville native, now a catcher at Walters State (Tenn.) Community College, helped lead her team to 10-0 and 9-1 victories over Jackson State (Tenn.) Community College. Wimpy had four home runs on the day.

The nation's No. 1 hitter wasn't done, though, adding two more home runs Saturday as the Lady Senators defeated Columbia State (Tenn.) Community College, 5-4 and 16-1.

For the weekend, Wimpy hit 10 for 13 (.769) with 14 RBIs and six home runs, including a grand slam against Columbia State.

Wimpy entered the weekend with a .630 batting average and a .672 on-base percentage and likely increased her lead in the nation in both categories. She has held the spot as the nation's best hitter for the last month.

With her weekend to remember, however, she should see her name climb the ladder in another category as well. Wimpy had 18 home runs going into Friday and Saturday's games, trailing the nation's leader, Olive Naotala of Howard College in Texas, by five home runs.

Wimpy's six homers this weekend should bump her to No. 1 in her third batting category. The 24 homers she currently has already bested the previous season-high at Walters State, 20, and have doubled her high mark for a season in high school, which was 12.

The Lady Senators are 39-4 this year, which includes a forfeit loss. Two of Walters State's defeats came at the hands at the nation's top team, Chattanooga State Community College, a team that features former Excel Christian pitcher Janna Scheff.

Scheff, like Wimpy, also has seen her name hover at the top of the National Junior College Athletic Association ranks. Going into last Wednesday's double-header with visiting Walters State, Scheff was fourth in the nation in individual pitching. According to the NJCAA website, she had appeared in 26 games, going 116 1/3 innings with nine earned runs, 74 hits, 113 strikeouts and 26 walks.

The season is winding down for both Scheff and Wimpy and their teams. Chattanooga State's next scheduled outing is May 7 in the Region VII tournament, while Walters State visits Roane State (Tenn.) Community College on Tuesday and hosts Volunteer State (Tenn.) Community College Friday before prepping for next month's region tournament.
