Bartow County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the Gilreath Road residence about 8:30 p.m. after a resident said the woman was in the bathroom threatening to burn the residence, according to the report. The resident said the female — one of nine people living in the home — suffers from schizophrenia.
The deputy made contact with the woman through the bathroom door. She began shouting she no longer wanted to live at the residence because the resident was abusing her. According to the report, the woman refused to leave the bathroom because “she did not like talking to the police.” The deputy continued attempting to get the female to leave the bathroom but she continued yelling and cursing.
According to the report, the female fell silent and the deputy smelled smoke. The woman then “announced she was burning.” The deputy kicked in the door and called for a second deputy to bring a fire extinguisher. The two deputies were able to put out the fire.
Bartow County Fire Department was called and the female handcuffed to prevent her from starting another fire.
The female was transported by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital with first- and second-degree burns to her arms and upper torso.
