Woodland High hosted its first-ever Wildcat Invitational swim meet on Saturday and placed second overall in the event, which was won by Sequoyah.

Sequoyah scored 847 points while Woodland totaled 674. Cass High placed eighth with 231 points.

Josh Ruger, Woodland head swimming and diving coach, said the invitational went smoothly and drew 11 Northwest Georgia teams — both boys and girls — and a lot of competition on the day at the meet, which was held at the Adairsville High aquatic center.

“The idea of inviting so many participants was to create great competition in all of our heats so our kids would have an excellent chance to score some of their best times and, perhaps, qualify for state,” Ruger said. “The outcome was great and was really tight from top to bottom.”

The coach said he was very pleased with Woodland’s second place overall.

“That was a great finish for us,” he said. “We also had a lot of best times and a lot of close races.

“We had a number of youngsters who hit state qualifying times in many different events throughout the day.”

The Woodland boys teams placed second overall in their division, which was won by Sequoyah. The Chiefs totaled 456 while Woodland earned 383 points. The Cass boys team placed seventh with 105 points.

Other placements in the boys teams were third, Northwest Whitfield; fourth, North Springs; fifth, Habersham; sixth, Cherokee; eighth, Ringgold; ninth, Alexander; 10th, Chapel Hill; 11th, Heritage.

In the girls events, Woodland placed fourth, with 291 points. Sequoyah finished first in the division, with 391 points, followed by North Springs, with 354, and Northwest Whitfield, 308. Cass High’s team placed seventh with 126 points.

Placing fifth were Cherokee; sixth, Alexander; eighth, Chapel Hilll; ninth, Habersham Central, 10th, Ringgold; and 11th, Heritage.

The placement of the combined teams included Northwest Whifield, third; North Springs, fourth; Cherokee, fifth; Habersham, sixth; Alexander, seventh; Chapel Hill, ninth; Ringgold, 10th; and Heritage, 11th.

The next big swimming meet is the Bartow County Championships, which are scheduled at Adairsville High School on Jan. 7, kicking off at noon.

Ruger said Saturday’s competition should help its participants as they prepare for state.

“Today was an amazing day full of great races,” Ruger added. “We had a lot of fun, had many best times and poised ourselves well going into holiday training in preparation for the second half of the season.”
