A Woodland High sophomore is awaiting court proceedings today after Bartow County Schools officials Wednesday afternoon discovered that he had brought an unloaded firearm onto campus.

Superintendent John Harper said school staff discovered that the student, a minor, had a revolver in his bookbag following a tip from another student. He said authorities are still trying to determine why the 10th-grader brought the gun onto school grounds.

"He talked to some kids and was bragging that he had one," Harper said. "Fortunately, one of the students made us aware, and we're very proud of that."

Harper said two school resource officers will be heading today to the Frank Moore Administration and Judicial Center in Cartersville as they work to determine what charge(s) the student will receive. The student was slated to attend today a hearing at the courthouse.

The teen was incarcerated at the Regional Youth Detention Center in Rome as of Thursday afternoon.
