Woodland's boys and girls track and field teams demonstrated a bit of the program's depth Saturday as both teams picked up wins at the Mohawk Invitational hosted by Gordon Central.

The Woodland girls scored 125 points to finish ahead of Riverdale (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), 119.5; Northwest Whitfield, 108; Gainesville, 77; Sonoraville, 57; Gordon Central, 52.5; Dalton, 43; Calhoun, 31; and Rockmart, 10.

The Woodland boys had just a few more points than their female counterparts, ending the day with 128 to slide ahead of Dalton, 98; Gainesville, 91; Calhoun, 88; Gordon Central, 62; Riverdale (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), 50; Northwest Whitfield, 49; North Murray, 25; Rockmart, 19; and Sonoraville, 13.

"It was definitely a team win today because, girl-wise, we didn't have Katie Harris, and we didn't have Samantha Patterson," Woodland boys coach Adrian Steele said.

Steele said Patterson -- who was in Arkansas receiving instruction from one of the country's top pole vaulting coaches -- could have placed at the top of Saturday's meet.

"If she would have jumped her best, she would have definitely won," he said.

Woodland also was without Harris.

"She's our fastest 400 runner, and she's our fastest 800 runner," Steele said. The girls still managed to get solid finishes from Aubrey Branch (third place) and Renee Arnold (fourth) in the 400 meter dash as well as in the 800 meter run, where Zaria Pressly came in fifth.

The boys weren't without some holes in their lineup either. Top pole vaulter Bryce Marratta was on the aforementioned Arkansas trip alongside Patterson, and Woodland had to pull Deo Adams toward the tail end of the meet after his hamstring injury -- exactly a week after Xavier Hendricks had to miss a meet with an injury.

Nevertheless, the Woodland 4x400 relay team won its event without Adams, and Tyler Heath placed sixth in the pole vault.

"Our kids did a great job. Some of the other kids are stepping up [and doing a good job]," Steele said. "It was nice to compete as usual. We enjoyed the meet. It was a good meet. ... [We're] just trying to get better so we peak at the right time -- hopefully around regionals and sectionals."

Both Woodland teams will be back in action Saturday at the Dalton Rotary Invitational.
