Cartersville's Elise Hart set two individual county swimming records and shared in two group records on her way to being named the girls athlete of the championships. Her individual competitions were the girls 100-yard backstroke and the girls 100-yard butterfly.
Zach Naelitz, the boys athlete of the championships, qualified for state in two individual events and helped two teams qualify for state. He claimed the boys 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle championship.
Josh Ruger, Woodland swimming coach and coordinator of the event, said the Bartow youngsters proved very competitive throughout the day.
"Everyone wants to win the county championship," Ruger said, adding they were very competitive with a number of county records set and state qualifying performances turned in.
Woodland won the combined championship by totaling 362 points. Cartersville placed second, with 260 points, while Adairsville came in third, with 200, and Cass garnered 149.
Woodland also won the boys championships, with 189 points, while Adairsville finished second with 260, Cartersville third with 101, and Cass, fourth, with 80.
The county girls swimming championship also went to Woodland but by a narrower margin. The Lady Wildcats scored 173 points, Cartersville, 159; Adairsville, 84; and Cass, 69.
Ruger said Cartersville pushed his girls team but Woodland defended its title through the overall strength of its program.
"We won some events and others we placed second or third and collected enough points to help us," he said. "We knew Cartersville would be very very strong."
