Woodland and Cass split their boys and girls games, with the Wildcats winning their high school tennis matches 3-2 on the strength of two doubles and one singles victory and the Lady Colonels winning 3-2 via the same formula.

The win raises the Wildcat record to 9-4, 3-1 in Region 7A-AAAA, pitting them against Chattahoochee in the region playoffs, which start April 13. Cass fell to 7-6, 1-3.

"Both our doubles teams have been securing two wins for us most of the season and it's been a matter of pulling out a singles win," boys head coach Kevin Tant said. "Both doubles teams deserve a lot of credit for the win today, too."

Conner Nichols notched the singles victory for the Wildcats. Tant said the Wildcats now must prepare for a tough region test.

"We are going to practice over the break," he said. "We know we are in for the second-biggest challenge of our season."

Tant said the team likely played its toughest match the second game of the season. "We've already played John's Creek, the defending state champion."

Winning for the Wildcats were, in singles, Nichols, who defeated Jeremy Coone, 6-1, 6-1; in doubles, Adam and Corey Tobin, who defeated Daniel Smith and Kaleb McBrayer, 6-0, 6-1; and Derek Everett and John Tate, who defeated Matt Moore and Brad Delee, 7-5, 6-4.

Winning for the Colonels were Jake Barnette, who defeated Chase Still, 6-3, 6-2; and Joey Johnson, who bested Brandon Parris, 6-1, 6-1.

Meanwhile, the Lady Colonels improved their record to 7-7 and 2-2 while the Lady Wildcats dropped to 3-9, 0-4.

Lady Colonels' head coach Chris Allen said a win against a cross-county rival is always important but added Thursday's affair was very competitive.

"We definitely had some matches that could have gone either way for both teams," he said. "Our girls tennis games have historically been close and tonight was no different."

He said the boys' loss doesn't put a damper on their season.

"I think we are obviously a better team than our record indicates," he said. "Last year we were 5-10 and we have a chance to post 10 wins this year."

He added the Lady Colonels will be going to the region playoffs a fourth consecutive year and the boys will be going for their first time in two years.

"My girls saved their best for the last match," Woodland girls head coach Beth Heath said. "They played with heart and soul tonight and gave me everything they had and played a wonderful, wonderful match."
