The Woodland High boys tennis team dispatched of Kell Tuesday at home rather easily, 5-0, while the girls lost a close match on the road at Kell, 3-2, despite strong play on Line 1 singles and Line 2 doubles.
For the boys, Bryce VanOrder won on Line 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2; Blake Bottegal won on Line 2, 6-4, 6-3; Connor Gunnell won on Line 3, 6-4, 6-1; Alex Banta and Hayden Lusk combined to win Line 1 doubles, 7-5, 6-0; and Max Costlow and Noah Pirkle won on Line 2, 7-6, 7-5.
For the girls, Christy Turner won on Line 1 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in what head coach Beth Heath said was “the match of the season.”
The Line 2 doubles team of Breanna Shook and Becky Wesley won 6-3, 6-4.
However, the Line 2 and 3 singles players lost in straight sets and Line 1 doubles lost a close match, 3-6, 5-7.
Adairsville sweeps LFO
Neither the Adairsville High girls or boys tennis teams had much trouble with Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Tuesday, both winning 5-0.
The top two singles players for the boys, Houston Medlock and Cody Kimbrough, each won 6-0, 6-0, while Line 3 player Cameron O’Neal won 6-2, 6-2.
The doubles teams of Zach Ogle and Jason Burdette and Jack Bates and Landon Swanson dropped a combined four games in their wins.
For the girls, the doubles teams stole the show, as Hannah Adcock and Olivia Long won 6-1, 6-0 on Line 1, while the Line 2 team of Micaela Pardo and Alexandra Kanturek didn’t even drop a game.
The singles players also cruised in straight sets. Megan Smith won on Line 1, 6-4, 6-2; Brantley Hughes won on Line 2, 6-4, 6-2; and Audrey Mixon won on Line 3, 6-0, 6-1.
With the wins, the girls improve to 2-1 in Region 6-AAA and the boys are now 1-2.
Canes cruise over Rome
The Cartersville High girls and boys tennis teams each won 5-0 over Rome Tuesday at Dellinger Park, and none of the matches were all that competitive.
For the boys, No. 1 and 2 singles players Will Allen and Matthew Slocum both won 6-0, 6-0. Line 3 singles player Davis Edwards had only a slightly tougher time, winning 6-2, 6-0.
The doubles teams of Juan Zazueta and Luke Kottemann (6-3, 6-1), and Ivy Nelson and Ross Norwood (6-1, 6-0) rounded out the sweep.
On the girls side, all three singles players — Ashley Popham, Emma McCary and Ansley Thompson — won 6-0, 6-0.
Meanwhile, Jordan Ross and Lydia Wiedetz won 6-1, 7-5 on Line 1 doubles and Alice Terry and Chloe Satterfield won 6-3, 6-1 on Line 2.
Cartersville will next head south to take on Troup County Thursday.
