3 T&F athletes place in top 10


Several former Bartow County high school track and field stars are competing well for Division I colleges as underclassmen. Anna Hightower, Samantha Patterson and Blake Perry all were in action last weekend and each placed in the top 10 of their events.


Anna Hightower (Georgia Tech Fr., Cartersville) — Hightower placed eighth in the pole vault with a height of 11 feet, 7.75 inches at the Virginia Tech Elite Indoor Meet.

Samantha Patterson (Jacksonville State So., Woodland) — Patterson placed 10th in the pole vault with a height of 10 feet, 9 inches at the Southern Illinois Invitational Saturday.

Blake Perry (Jacksonville State So., Cartersville) — Perry placed eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.38 seconds at the Southern Illinois Invitational Saturday.


Peyton Gollhofer (Ball State Fr., Laurel Springs Academy, Cartersville) — Gollhofer won both her singles and doubles matches Saturday against Detroit Mercy Saturday. She won on the No. 3 singles line in two sets by scores of 6-3, 6-2. She also won at No. 1 doubles by a score of 6-4.


Gerry Vassil (Belmont Abbey Jr., Cartersville) — Vassil participated in two duals Jan. 30 against Tiffin University and Kutztown. Vassil lost each match wrestling in the 184-pound weight class. Belmont Abbey lost the two duals.
